I Didn't Know I Had It In Me - Creative Exercise 6
Introduction
I am now in week 6 of writing blog posts. This journey has
been interesting and continues to be interesting. I have made quite a bit of
growth, and it has only been a small amount of time. For this week’s creative
exercise I chose, I Didn’t Know I Had It In Me.
This exercise is also in the book Caffeine For The Creative Mind 250
Exercises To Wake Up Your Brain by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee
Oldfield. I have grown to really like the exercises in this book and the
creative energy that was put into making it.
I Didn’t Know I Had It In Me
As I was reading through some of the exercises in the book, I
was trying to decide between about 5, but when I saw this one, I knew that it was
the one. The title spoke loudly and directly AT ME!
This exercise was constructed to work on generating ideas.
It helps when you are stuck and you cannot think of anything else, at the moment.
The exercise instructs you to look around your environment and pick a random noun.
It states that the more random the noun, the better the exercise will be. Next,
you grab a piece of paper and write that noun at the top. The hard part is about
to be announced…! You have to come up with 50 words that you think of when
you see this word. GO!
The word I chose is…
FAN
And this is my list of 50 words!
Cool Dry Circulate Kitchen Air Outside Gym Construction Home Depot Sleeping Noise Electric Extension Cord Baby Heat Mister Solar Powered Portability Computer Engine Porch Patio Force Hair Dryer |
Living Area Cheap Theme Parks Lights Blades Speed Direction Distance Summertime Oscillate Air Conditioner Dust Walmart Ceiling Remote Stand Light Bulbs Fuses Batteries Outlet Blow Photo Shoot Loud Silent |
Conclusion
I have come to LOVE doing my creative exercises. I am such a
creative person/artist to the core. I can be logical, but I love spontaneity.
This was a rather simple exercise, but the more that I brainstormed, the more
ideas I came up with. At some points, they went in totally different directions.
With one simple noun, 50 more ideas came about. I am sure that if I kept going,
I would come up with some interesting out-of-the-box ideas. Who would have
thought they would all stem from the word FAN?
