What An Odd Place For A Totem Pole - Creative Exercise 21
Introduction
It is 2024 in the United States of America, and there is one object in this world that almost
everyone has, unless you are very old or a child. Children and old folks
sometimes have them these days as well, but they lack the knowledge of how to
use them.
I bet you have guessed what it is by now, the object is a cell phone. Cell phones are attached to everyone's hip. People constantly have their heads buried in their screens, on social media, texting, working, and so on. So, if everyone has a cell phone, then there is cell service everywhere. To have cell service, we must have cell towers. Don’t worry, there is a plethora of them planted around every city.
The creative exercise that I have chosen is "What an Odd Place For A Totem Pole" out of the series CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND written by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.
The task is to list 10 ways to disguise these poles either by covering them up or finding a way to raise them so high that you cannot see them in the hope that we will have good enough cell service that won't drop your call every 100 yards.
10 Ideas:
Use them as street/stop light poles
Use them to hold billboards
Use them in the architecture of a building/bridge
Use a hologram to mask it
Use it as a windmill
Mold them into a piece of art and paint them
Make them mobile so they can float in space
Create a device to make them invisible to the eye
A clock tower
A monument
Conclusion
Cell service towers are eye sores. They stick out like sore thumbs, and I
think it would be great to find ways to make them look better. I also think
that the same idea could be done for power lines and other poles. Art brings
out the beauty in many things. The world has become dependent on these
inventions so we should make them more appealing and a little bit more
comfortable to be around.
