Like, Umm...I mean It's Like... - Creative Exercise 5
Introduction
My creative exercise for this week is called “Like, Umm… I mean It’s Like…”. This exercise helps develop your creative writing skills. I also found this exercise in the book CAFFEINE FOR THE CREATIVE MIND, 250 EXERCISES TO WAKE UP YOUR BRAIN by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield.
“Like, Umm…I mean It’s Like…” is an exercise that involves
picking a smell and describing it. Our sense of smell is very powerful, and it
would definitely be a HUGE loss if it were gone or didn’t exist. There is one catch,
though. When describing this smell, the words “like” and “as” cannot be used at
all. This is where the exercise gets interesting and super creative.
I pulled up Microsoft Word on my laptop, and I began my
journey. I instantly knew the smell that I was going to write about. I don’t
think I have an absolute favorite smell. I love many smells, but if I had to
choose one, this smell comes close to it.
Like, Umm...I Mean It's Like...
It is COFFEE!
(It really is CAFFEINE for the CREATIVE MIND!)
So, this is COFFEE:
One of my favorite smells is popular across the world. It is
a warm and bold fragrance that permeates through the air leaving your body with
a craving sensation. It quickly lures you in and before you know it, you have wound
up at its exact location. It is added time to your day when you feel you have
run out, and it is a smile on your face when it reaches your palms. For others,
it is a gentle sedative that rocks you to sleep. It leaves you wishing you had
bought it when you had the chance, and it always keeps you coming back.
Conclusion
I think most of the consensus can agree that coffee is a
pretty amazing gift. Most of us would not be able to live without it. This writing
exercise made me pull out my creative bones. I enjoyed the restrictions on the
writing because I had to come up with alternative ways to describe coffee without
using “like” and “as”. When we are describing and comparing things these words
are often used to do so, and I caught myself trying to use these words. It
forced me to reroute. At times we need a little push to get our creative juices
flowing, and this exercise forced me out of my comfort zone.
