White or Wheat? - Creative Exercise 4
Introduction
This week’s exercise was a doozy to pick. I have been trying to
find an exercise that is something that I normally would not do, but for some
reason, this task has taken me more time than I expected. I completed a couple
of exercises, again. The exercise that I ended up going with is called White or
Wheat. I found this creative exercise in a book called CAFFIENE FOR THE
CREATIVE MIND: 250 EXERSCISES TO WAKE UP YOUR BRAIN by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee
Oldfield.
White or Wheat
This exercise instructs you to create a sandwich. This is not any
ordinary sandwich. In your mind, when you think of creating a sandwich, it will
be delicious and hand crafted with different meats, vegetables, condiments,
cheeses, and breads. This sandwich will make your mouth water until it is
finally glazing your taste buds after taking your first HUMUNGOUS bite. Well, this
is not the case. I have set you up for failure.
The exercise is to create the absolute worst sandwich possible.
The items you normally place in your mouth-watering sandwich will be replaced
with items that are much less satisfying. The ingredients are as follows:
BREAD: Choose anything you’d find in a gym locker
CONDIMENTS: Choose anything in paste form
CHEESE: Choose anything that would melt over a fire
VEGETABLES: Choose anything found in a hardware store
MEATS: Choose anything with a smooth texture
I brainstormed for a little bit. I wrote each ingredient down, and
I formed a list of items in each category. This is what I came up with:
BREAD: dirty underwear, dirty shorts, dirty shirts, smelly shoes, deodorant,
brush, soap, shampoo
CONDIMENTS: glue, tomato paste, drywall mud, lotion, body scrub,
ointment, toothpaste
CHEESE: plastic, marshmallows, aluminum cans, wax, ice
VEGETABLES: wrench, hammer, sockets, ratchet straps, drills, mowers,
saws, screws, tape, glue, wood, rope, paint, funnels, tarps, tape measure, levels
MEATS: silk, ice
Final Decision
BREAD: dirty underwear
CONDIMENTS: drywall mud
CHEESE: aluminum cans
VEGETABLES: screws
MEATS: silk
Conclusion
I skipped over this exercise quite a few times. For some reason,
it just wasn’t jumping out at me. After doing some research and going over
exercises, I ultimately decided this is the one. I liked that the exercise
involved food (who doesn’t love food), and it got creative with what the ingredients
would consist of. I did not have to pick multiple selections for the ingredients,
but I felt that brainstorming the ingredients would help me come up with my
best solution. I got a good laugh out of doing this exercise, and I came up with
a pretty interesting sandwich.
