Ini Archibong designs packaging for Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre's Gin & Juice - Design Post 23
Design is everywhere. What is appealing to the viewer's eyes? What deeply interests their intrinsic desires? How can we get someone to purchase a product from our target market? Can we get people outside of our target market to buy these products? These are all the questions that ran through my mind as I read the article I am about to discuss in this post. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre recently launched a drink named Gin & Juice which is a product of the Grammy-nominated song “Gin & Juice” from Snoop Dog’s debut album Doggystyle-produced by Dr. Dre.
The article is “Ini Archibong designs packaging for Snoop
Dogg and Dr. Dre’s Gin & Juice” written by Jennifer Hahn. The link is

This new product features the
image of a hand-drawn lowrider that captures your interest at first glance. This
was produced from the inspiration and vision of designer Ini Archibong, a
Nigerian-American designer out of Los Angeles. He wanted to tie in the 1990s
West Coast Hip Hop G-funk genre which Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre both brought to
life.
“The goal with the design was to
encapsulate the spirit and era of West Cost when the original Gin and Juice
track was released,” Archibong told Dezeen’s Jennifer Hahn. “I wanted to
transmit the reverence and unique culture of the era that has now become known
worldwide.”
Next to that is the parental
advisory logo that is planted right in the middle of the can, you can’t miss
it.
Archibong states: “Bringing in
the symbol of parental advisory is to remind people how intrusive, new, fresh,
and frightening this art form was at the time.”
The lowrider at the bottom of the
can was hand-drawn by an illustrator out of Los Angeles named Wayne Johnson. It
is rendered in four different colors to represent the different available
flavors – citrus is green, melon is red, passionfruit is purple, and apricot is
orange.
The low rider is a depiction of the
lyric “rolling down the street, smoking indo, sipping on gin and juice.” Straight
of out Snoop’s song.
The design decision was made to
keep the can completely white so that the lowrider and the different colors of
each flavor are the main focal point “as if it were being immortalized in a
museum” says Hahn.
Archibong and Dr. Dre both use
the minimalistic approach to their designs, so this was also a major
contributing factor.
Gin & Juice will not be the
last business venture that Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre collaborate on. There will be
more to follow.
According to Hahn Dre said, “Together, we always try to create magic. We’re having fun, being creative. And everything about this product is really us. There’s passion behind it and friendship and love and a culture.”
At the end of the day, all anyone
wants to feel is love and passion from their creations. I thought that the design
decisions made for this product were spot on. The product jumps out at you, and
when you look at it you can tell that this as Hip Hop written all over it. I am
a long-time lover and supporter of Hip Hop, and this would immediately catch my
eye because it is relatable. Not to mention, the vibrant colors. This was a successful
project and a well-written write-up. The link to purchase the renowned “Gin &
Juice” is below.
